Favourite Beer Memories …

I have many good beer memories from the Horse Brass Pub in Portland and wanted to post some in honour of the pub’s owner, Don Younger, who passed away today. While I’ve been going to the Horse Brass for years, I confess I didn’t know how important Don Younger has been to the craft beer industry in Oregon (and beyond) until reading some of the tributes today. From the long list of beer offerings, to the comforting English pub food and the wonderful matchboxes (sign of a classy joint, or at least one owned by a devoted smoker) the Horse Brass is a special place that I hope all friends of beer get to visit at least once. I am grateful to my brother for introducing me to the Horse Brass, and for the times we spend there when I come visit. (And I will always remember shopping for beer and jelly babies at Belmont Station after a few pints, when it was next door.) This photo was taken in July 2008 when Cherryl and I were there for the Oregon Brewers Festival. After spending several hours at the festival we somehow made our way to the Horse Brass for more beer. A huge plate of fries saved us.

We are two good friends who love beer and will travel far to find it. We make notes of the beer we discover and share our musings with others because we believe beer is a tradition that is best shared, and because otherwise we wouldn't remember them.
